In general, design implies a creative and systematic plan to solve a problem or achieve certain objectives, and the use of images, symbols or even words for the same purpose, is termed as graphic design. It is a visual communication and expression, of concepts and ideas, aesthetically using various graphic elements and tools.

Elements of Graphic Design


There are image-based designs involving photos, illustrations, logos and symbols, or type-based designs, or a combination of both techniques in a graphic design, consisting of the following elements.

Lines: They divide the space or separate the content in a layout, and can be of any type. Designers use them to guide the eyes of the viewer, or make other elements follow its path.

Shapes: They fill up the space, create layouts, supporting the text, and balance the design.

Color: It is an important element, and with the understanding of color theory, designers can amazingly influence a design, using it on all other elements of design.

Type:  After placing the contextual and effective text, designers modify it using different fonts, changing their alignment, spacing, size, and color.

Texture: It gives the feel of the surface through its visual appearance and style, mirroring the actual texture, enhanced by selection of appropriate paper and material.

 

Tools of Graphic Design


A creative mind with an artistic inclination, a good sense of observation, and analytical thinking are the essential tools for graphic design, in addition to conventional and technological aids. Designers employ various methods that use combinations of art and technology, along with communication tools to convey a particular message, and create an impressive layout.

Computer: It is the marvel of technology with which one can create any kind of design, by the help of software specialized in aiding to create illustrations, work on photographs, enhance the text, and layout the design.

Software: Design related software like Illustrator and Photoshop put at your disposal, several tools and utilities that help render form to ideas.
