Webmastering
is a self-explanatory term, meaning mastering the web, or can be defined as controlling, tackling, and administering all the aspects related to running and maintenance of a website, with webmaster as the person responsible for this work.

Managing a website is not an easy job. It requires a multi-talented person with various skills, who is agile, quick, ready to update self with technological changes, act with the responsibility like that of a captain, to keep the ship sailing even at times of rough weather, or as a race driver required to steer the car ahead of the competitors.

Duties of a Webmaster


A webmaster is known as a web architect or web developer, and as a businessperson, who covers all aspects of webmastering as mentioned below.

To design and develop a website for an individual or organization, implementing it successfully and being responsible to maintain it.

 

Accepting and approving well-researched content, as well as design for the website.

 

Responsible for usability testing of the website, and improve it based on user experience and web analytic reports.

 

Checking of the website for any error or problems and implementing technical solutions, including programming and scripting.

 

Periodically monitoring the status and ranking of the website along with its pages, work to keep it ahead of the competition, including promotion of the website, and increasing site traffic.

 

Keep the website updated, if required on daily basis, respond to customer queries or comments, handle user registration, and access controls.

 

Host the site; assure its security, fast connectivity, and round-the-clock availability.

 

Undertake the care and upkeep of the hardware as well as the software, related to the website and the web server.

 

Required to perform search engine optimization, analyze the website using specific tools, and provide technical expertise.

Webmastering appears to be a herculean task when the webmaster is required to have an array of skills like that of a writer, designer, website developer, database specialist, network expert, and an internet marketer. The multitasking webmaster has to be a master of some, but definitely a jack of all required skills, in order to lessen dependency on others and smoothly accomplish the tasks. Large web projects require delegation of some jobs to people specifically skilled in them, with the webmaster, requiring interpersonal skills, as the project in-charge or manager, and coordinate the various tasks.
